Healthy Smoothie

So you want to drink this….

Because it’s healthy, because you will feel good afterwards, because everyone is saying that you should…

Well let me just add that besides all of the above, this smoothie is genuinely TASTY! No artificial colors or

additives to make it look super pretty, but looks aren’t everything…

Frozen strawberries, frozen peaches, banana, 0% fat Greek yogurt, coconut water, kale.

Very simple ingredients which you can alter to your preferences. The resulting liquid is fruity, tangy, and VERY tasty, but the Kale is still in tiny bits. Remember, it’s important to masticate your smoothie. Mind out of the gutter! You should use a chewing motion because your saliva mixes with it and will aid in digestion as it begins to break down the food. It sounds gross, but it’s true. And after all, you are drinking this for your health. The Greek yogurt is packed full of protein to help you stay full, and the fruits and Kale have good vitamins and minerals. Never drink all-fruit smoothies. That is just a sugar bomb, when what you really want are vitamins, protein, and fiber. My smoothie came out to be about 277 calories. Next time I will weigh more heavily on the non-fruit ingredients to make it healthier and keep me fuller longer ;)

I picked up this blender for $19.99 at my local GNC yesterday. I was concerned that it couldn’t handle frozen fruit or leafy greens but I was impressed!

It didn’t WANT to blend the kale, but I used the pulse setting and repeatedly flipped it over while blending. I love that the to-go cup is the same one you blend in so there is less mess! I tried juicing last year, but the pain of cleaning for 10 minutes after every juice was just too much. Besides, a juicer removes fiber, leaving a powerful shot of vitamins and minerals, but I already eat fairly healthy and take vitamins. I want a good snack, sometimes a meal, and I want all the fiber. Easy-peasy!

Very easy to clean, very convenient and compact, but it is a hassle to flip it all around trying to get the blades to work. For $20 it’s exactly what I expected and I’m pretty happy.

Do you make smoothies at home? have a favorite recipe?

  1. For your next one you might find it easier to add the kale after you have the other ingredients broken down a bit. Blenders work best with wet ingredients and liquids. When I worked at the spa a while back one of the jobs I did everyday was making juices. Using juicers and blenders I ended up making smoothies from so many different veggies.

  2. I too prefer blenders. Thsi looks good and powerful. I have become a big fan of greek yogurt. It’s the only kind I buy
